Facts for Richard(1) Hall:

  1. Town vote: Mentions: “…Goodman Hall’s fence below the burying place…” 1/5/1665[1]. This date is of interest since it is a full 6 years before Martha and Richard are married. (Did Richard go to Hull from Bradford and get in trouble with Martha and then return to Bradford to live?)
  2. Richard and Martha have a daughter, Sarah, c. 1671, who is conceived out of wedlock. (see below). Sarah dies in 1690, age 19.[2]
  3. October 31st, 1671, Richard Hall and Martha Benson are summoned to Suffolk County Court from Hull, Massachusetts, but do not appear, as they have removed to Hauarell (Haverhill). A warrant is put out for them with the Sherriff of Merrimack. They are charged with “fornication”.[3]
  4. April 30th, 1672, Richard and Martha Hall, now married, are sentenced to 15 lashes or 40 shillings.[4]
  5. Applied for Freeman status 10/11/1676[5]
  6. Town meeting: A committee was chosen “…for to advise and consult… as to ye settling ye Rev. Zecheriah Symmes in office. Mr. Symmes, John Tenny, Richard Hall...” 1/11/1681[6]
  7. First Deacons of Bradford: “David Hazeltine and Richard Hall were ‘nominated to provide elements for the Lord’s supper Nov. 2, 1682.’ [7]
  8. With 18 others, signed the covenant to form the first church in Bradford, MA 12/27/1682[8]
  9. Also in 1682: “Martha, wife of Richard Hall, Dis. From Haverhill” indicates that Martha Hall joined the Bradford church from Haverhill, as did almost all of the first members, as that was where they had previously been worshipping.[9]
